Abbey Street in the 1960's

Photograph from Lenton Local History Society

Our unknown photographer took this shot from the Dunkirk Fire Station tower.

What you can see in the foreground are the backs of the properties fronting on to Abbey Street and a small section of Warwick Street.  In the middle distance, on the right, is Bridge House.  Immediately beyond it but totally obscured from view is a stretch of the Nottingham Canal and on the other side of the canal is the Johnson Arms public house.  On the northern side of Abbey Street an array of different buildings can be seen - most of which are no longer with us.  The short terrace of properties on the left were erected by W.J. Simms, Sons & Cooke Ltd. and the QMC's water storage towers now stand in their place.  The building with 'GARAGE' painted on its roof is where the petrol station is now.  The tall building with the high pitched roof is the Primitive Methodist Chapel, pulled down in the 1970's
