Research in Lenton and Beyond

You help us – We help you!

As stated elsewhere on this site one of the Society’s current projects is research into those with Lenton connections who died in the First World War.  In most instances this involves delving into sources local to Nottinghamshire.  But with some, the search for information has taken us out of the county.  Below is a list of localities we are interested in.

If there is someone living in these areas who would be prepared to carry out a little research on our behalf we would be willing to undertake research for them in Nottinghamshire on a quid pro quo basis.

If you would like us to undertake research for you but you aren’t in a position to help with our researches we would be prepared to do so provided you agreed to reimburse us for our time.  Any monies generated in this manner would be used to fund the purchase of birth, marriage and death certificates relating to the families of our dead servicemen and women.

The localities that we are currently interested in are as follows:

Bedfordshire: Luton

Buckinghamshire: Newport Pagnell

Cambridgeshire: Cambridge, Ely, Peterborough

Australia - see below

Australia
Isaiah Green
served with 2nd Battalion Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment) and was killed in action on 10th July 1916.  His Canadian attestation form stated that his next of kin was George Green of 23 Tyne St., New Lenton, Notts., England.  It further revealed that he was born in Australia on 1st March 1890.  What exactly the relationship was between Isaiah and George Green is not clear.

The main problem, however, is that we have no idea which state of Australia he was born in. If anyone can help pinpoint this information - (are there other sources such as censuses that he might subsequently appear on?) then we would be happy to carry out some research for them relating to Nottinghamshire in exchange for this information.

Papakura, New Zealand  - Query Solved !
Among the names on the Lenton war memorial is the following person Sergeant Leonard Langley, whose personal details are as follows: served with the 25th Battalion of the Australian Infantry, Australian Imperial Force Service No. 668.  He died 14th November 1916. His parents have been identified as William Henry Langley and Annie Langley.  His father died in 1918.  Annie Langley continued to live in Nottingham until about 1922 after which there are no further references to her in local records.  One possible explanation for her ‘disappearance’ is that she left the country.  Our reason for making this suggestion is that we have come across the following death notice which appeared in the Nottingham Evening Post: LANGLEY Annie died 8.8.1954 at Papakura New Zealand, late of Lenton.

Thanks to Andrew Barke out in New Zealand we now know that Annie Langley of Papakura New Zealand is indeed the person we were trying to pinpoint.
